Strike at Half Dome Fly Fishing the Eastern Sierra

Strike at Half Dome

A spectacular program is available about a calamitous lightning episode on the summit of Half Dome—the subject of Bob Madgic’s newly published book:

Bob Madgic will present a PowerPoint program on Shattered Air , the dangers of lightning and the glory of Yosemite--its art legacy, natural history, stunning features--while narrating the story of the hikers who embarked up the famous Half Dome trail in July, 1985. Five of these individuals continued to the Dome’s summit into the very vortex of a powerful thunderstorm and took refuge in a rock enclosure there. Two savage lightning strikes occurred, killing two and injuring the other three. Other hikers arrived at the scene and administered emergency medical treatment to the survivors for over five hours. An air ambulance service from Modesto then carried out a dramatic, post-midnight helicopter evacuation of the three victims.

“Madgic provides a fascinating account…and his contribution to the adventure category is at once a terrifying story and an urgent cautionary tale.” Publishers Weekly

“Yosemite Valley crackles with electricity. Now, in Bob Madgic’s Shattered Air, electricity meets life—with tragedy as the outcome. If you like energy, you’ll love this book.”—Carl Pope, Executive Director, Sierra Club

Shattered Air has the breathtaking immediacy and authenticity that distinguish some of the finest accounts of mountain expeditions gone terribly awry—including Joe Simpson’s Touching the Void and Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air.—Sarah Rabkin, UC Santa Cruz

"Strike at Half Dome" was a featured program at the Yosemite Associations's 2006 Spring Forum in Yosemite Valley.

This program is available to libraries, outdoor groups, bookstores and other organizations.

Fly Fishing the Eastern Sierra

A program for fly fishing clubs present by Bob Madgic. It includes spectacular slides and informative narration on: the Upper Owens, NF San Joaquin, Hot, Green, Rush, Lee Vining, Yost Alger and East Walker Creeks; and Crowley, McLeod, Twin, Heenan, Kirman, Topaz, Parker, June, Grant, Silver and Walker Lakes.

The first part is an intereactive exercise on California's native trout, important for all fly fishers.

Throughout, Bob emphasizes fly fishing tactics, conservation, fishing remote waters, natural and regional history, and hiking.

"Bob Madgic begins with a captivatiing introduction on California's native trout. Following is an engaging presentation on the eastern Sierra. It is not just about catching fish, but about enjoying every aspect that our environment offers the fly fisher and outdoor enthusiast. A great Program." Tom Hogye, Program Chair, Santa Cruz Fly Fisherman.

Bob, a former high school administrator in the Bay Area, has authored two fishing books: Pursuing Wild Trout: A Jouney in Wilderness Values; and A guide to California's Freshwater Fishes. A copy of each book will be donated to the club. He has authored articles for California Fly Fisher magazine on many of the waters featured in the progrm.
